Putting Patients First
A GP referral is required before being seen, and as all referrals are triaged it is important that the paperwork is either dropped off at the rooms or faxed or e mailed before any appointments are arranged by Helen or Annette (0431 876507). A confirmatory letter will be sent out. New consultations are 20 minutes long and review appointments 10 minutes. Longer sessions can be booked but will attract a higher fee. If you cannot attend the appointment please contact beforehand or there will be a charge and no further appointments may be possible.
The standard fee is $200 for new appointments and $100 for review. There may be additional costs for tests such as bladder scans or flow tests. Payment is by cash, cheque or card. Invoices will be provided which will enable automatic repayment of the current MBS refund by Medicare. DVA gold card holders are generally seen at no additional cost and there are discounts for Senior card holders. There is no general bulk billing. Unfortunately private health insurance does not cover consultation fees but please let us know what insurance cover you have at the time of booking.
The majority of patients will require additional tests. Forms for these will be provided at the consultation and they will have to be booked and paid for with the radiology and pathology providers. The results are usually provided by mail/post and, where possible, additional appointments are avoided.
The majority of Philip's surgical work is in the public sector at Casey Hospital in Berwick, and monthly at Central Gippsland Health Service in Sale. All operations at both sites are covered by Medicare and there are no out-of-pocket expenses.
Due to lack of equipment, or junior doctor cover, it may not be possible to do some operations at Sale. More complex operations can be booked onto a Monash Health list, though there is no guarantee that Philip will be the covering surgeon.
Patients can have private procedures at St John of God Hospital in Berwick or Mulgrave Private Hospital. Not all private insurance companies are equal with some (La Trobe included) paying considerably lower fees for procedures than competitors. Whilst Philip does not generally charge gap fees for the majority of private operations from 2023 these lower fees for the same procedure will no longer be subsidised and a gap payment to make up to the BUPA/Medibank fee will be charged. There may also be anaesthetic, assistant and hospital fees which Philip has no control over. Fixed price options may be available for patients with no insurance.
Vasectomy is still the easiest to perform and most reliable form of contraception and rarely causes any long-term problems. Philip is able to offer vasectomy with local anaesthesia at the Drouin rooms, with a gap payment, or with either local or general anaesthesia at Sale Hospital, which is covered by Medicare but subject to the waiting list for routine procedures.
Insured patients can have a vasectomy with gap payments at Mulgrave Private Hospital (not St John of God Hospital).
