Putting Patients First

From July 2023 patients from metropolitan Melbourne (seen in the Berwick clinic) will need to have private medical insurance. This will not be necessary for Gippsland residents.
A GP referral is required before being seen, and as all referrals are triaged it is important that the paperwork is either dropped off at the rooms or faxed or e mailed before any appointments are arranged by Helen or Annette (0431 876507). A confirmatory letter will be sent out. New consultations are 20 minutes long and review appointments 10 minutes. Longer sessions can be booked but will attract a higher fee. If you cannot attend the appointment please contact beforehand or there will be a charge and no further appointments may be possible.
From July 2023 the standard fee for new appointments is $250 and $150 for review (the first fee rise in 5 years). Concession fees (Senior Card Holders) remain frozen at $150/$80. There may be additional costs for tests such as bladder scans or flow tests. Payment is by cash, cheque or card. Invoices will be provided which will enable automatic repayment of the current MBS refund by Medicare. DVA gold card holders are generally seen at no additional cost. There is no general bulk billing. Unfortunately private health insurance does not cover consultation fees but please let us know what insurance cover you have at the time of booking.
The majority of patients will require additional tests. Forms for these will be provided at the consultation and they will have to be booked and paid for with the radiology and pathology providers. The results are usually provided by mail/post and, where possible, additional appointments are avoided.

Philip operates at Central Gippsland Health Service in Sale. All operations there are covered by Medicare and there are no out-of-pocket expenses.
Due to lack of equipment, or junior doctor cover, it may not be possible to do some operations at Sale. More complex operations will have to be referred to the metropolitan area.
Patients can have private procedures at St John of God Hospital in Berwick or Mulgrave Private Hospital. Not all private insurance companies are equal with some (La Trobe included) paying considerably lower fees for procedures than competitors. Whilst Philip does not generally charge gap fees for the majority of private operations, from 2023 these lower fees for the same procedure will no longer be subsidised and a gap payment to make up to the BUPA/Medibank fee will be charged. There may also be anaesthetic, assistant and hospital fees which Philip has no control over. Fixed price options may be available for patients with no insurance.
